Men and Hair Loss: Save that Hair!

Many men today have increasingly become concerned with a growing problem–male hair loss. Usually, baldness happens over a course of time. At first, one might not even notice that hair is being lost. Once discovered, many questions come to mind as to what one can expect to happen. Therefore, one might ask, “Is there anything that I can do to prevent the loss of hair?” There are certain appropriate and effective ways to combat male pattern baldness. Growing hair out men is our main goal here. Thus, it is essential that we consider a lot of factors in achieving this goal.

First and most importantly, DRINK WATER. At least one gallon of water a day is needed to keep your body cleansed of impurities that prevent necessary nutrients from reaching the hair follicles of the scalp. To help put a gallon into perspective, you can usually count on eight cups equaling one gallon of fluid.

Second, eating a diet high in protein is also essential. An easy rule of thumb is to eat approximately one gram of protein for every pound that you weigh. For example, a person that weighs 180 pounds would want to eat at least 180 grams of protein each day. Good sources of protein would be beef, ground or lean cuts, poultry and seafood, mainly fish. You can expect additional benefits to eating a diet high in protein, such as having more energy. Adding exercise while eating a high protein diet will also help to increase strength and muscle mass.

Following this diet will ensure that you get enough Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), as well as the natural oils found in fish and flax seed oils. Having these natural oils will increase your body’s natural abilities to prevent hair loss. Avoiding alcohol, which increases estrogen levels and limiting sugar and saturated fats (animal fat), will also slow down male hair loss. In addition, limiting processed and junk food will help to regenerate hair growth faster.

The third important way to stop hair loss is by using a product made especially for this condition. The media has bombarded us with advertising promoting these products. Claims are made that hair loss can be stopped in one day and that re-growth of hair will happen quickly. The truth of the matter is that most of these products make unfounded and exaggerated claims. Most men are not aware of the fact that these products are made in pill form, with little, if any control of quality. Contamination of ingredients can become a major problem, as there are very little regulations of the factories where these supplements are manufactured.

One popular drug that is now widely used for hair loss is called Propecia. Commonly called Finasteride, this drug was originally developed for prostate cancer. Some men like to use it because of the seemingly fast results, yet are totally unaware of the problems associated with this drug. Side effects have included such things as decreased sexual desire, ED (erectile dysfunction), premature ejaculation and low sperm count, resulting in lower fertility.
